I am passing on a story some friends of mine from Indiana told me. I attended a tractor show in northern Indiana last summer and made a side trip to Larwill, IN to check out these folk's Indiana Silo that's inside one of their barns. While talking about barns, the lady showed me this old wooden framing mallet and told me how and where they found it: They were making hay in the summer of 1997. The layers of hay bales were getting near the top of north side of the hay mow. The wife put her water bottle on the top of a side beam. It was dark in there but she felt something move. This mallet was found sitting on the top beam, where they are sure some barn builder had left it well over 100 years ago. They have been told it was made from a mulberry knot. Whether or not that is actually what happened, it's an interesting story.

Good story. Wonder how long the guy looked for it and never found it.
