This is our Monitor Barn, which is a work in progress. My wife and I have done all the construction on this with the exception of the cement pad.

Just a couple of pics of the reason for no progress lately. Some of you may have heard of this storm, The Christmas Day Storm of 2012. It started on Christmas day and went thru the night. We got at least eight inches on top of an eighth inch of ice. Some of Arkansas got as much as fourteen inches and thousands were out of power. Power outages ran as long, for a lot of folks, as much as ten days. This was very unusual for Arkansas. We were very lucky and only had power snicks, a couple of times. Very cold here since then also. The snow on the barn north side roof has not completely left as of today.(1-5-13) Made for some very pretty pictures. We come from New England, so this is no big deal for us, but here in these small towns that rarely see any snow depth, it is a problem. They don't have any snow plows. We just stay at home and hope it melts. It did kind of seem nice to see it again on Christmas. Sure wish it hadn't caused so much trouble.

Dave, I love your barn and followed all your construction from another site. Truly a work of art. What was your original purpose for building the barn? Can you tell me why you call it a "Monitor" barn? Is this a brand name or mfg name? Or is it a type of barn? Might be an interesting thread: Barn Types. Tobacco, Bank, Round, ect..... Thanks. John

Can you tell me why you call it a "Monitor" barn? Is this a brand name or mfg name? Or is it a type of barn? Might be an interesting thread: Barn Types. Tobacco, Bank, Round, ect..... Thanks. John First off I would like to again thank you for joining the forum, for your post and interest in our barn. The main purpose for the barn is we needed more space. The reason it is a barn and not some other type of building, is that it just goes very well with the house, the land and the area. Monitor barn is a type of barn. They are also known as a RCA( raised center aisle ). Which is what a monitor barn is. The center section is usually two stories high and each side is one story high. More or less. I chose this style because of the looks and the amount of space we could get out of the same foot print. Also because, even tho they are a lot harder to complete, I would be able to handle the roof rafters and tin etc. by myself. In our case no one piece was over 12 feet long. Except for the center posts, that are 16 feet tall, but they are standing on the pad and not 20 feet up. I agree, that separate categories for barn types may be the way that we will want to set this forum up. Without any members to start with, I only went with what you see now. But as long as it is about barns, we will be very flexable as to how the members want this done. We just need to see how it goes.

Thanks Steve This is still a work in progress, so the interior is also only partially finished. Here are a couple of interior pics. The south wall. Rear top interior. I am going to also include an attachment. We want to see how this feature works on this forum. Thanks again.

Yes that is local grown Arkansas red cedar. No, that is what will show. The interior is put up diagonal and the exterior is put up vertical. It is two layers of cedar with a special black Super Tex paper in between.

Dave, It must smell GREAT in there! My old tobacco barn hasn't had tobacco stored in it in probably 30yr, but on a dam day, you can still smell the tobacco..... Red ceder must be plentiful in your area? Pretty pricy here, but not much last longer. Beautiful! IMHO (in my humble opinion) somethings are worth doing just to stand and admire!!!! Another art form so to speak!

Another art form so to speak! If all four walls were done, it would probably have an aroma, but with the wind blowing thru, it doesn't have much of a smell. Maybe when summer comes and the walls get warm. It sure had a lot of smell while we were cutting it and making sawdust.

This is a test post to show how the new forum now works. I am using some pictures from both our website and three attachments loaded from my PC. The post was created on the BBCode tab, and then reviewed on the Visual tab. For some reason the word Visual has replaced the word Preview. We know a lot of the members are pretty techy, we are just trying to help those that are in need of it. Here is a picture of the north side, this one is from the website and has a url address. the first attachment below the second one the third one It will now let you have three attachments to a post. Hope this will help.
